156 West 73rd Street Location West 73rd Street between Columbus & Amsterdam Avenues, south side New York, N.Y. 10023 Neighborhood Upper West Side Built Aug. 23, 1880, to May 21, 1881 Use Residence Landmark Status Within the Upper West Side-Central Park West Historic District, designated in 1990. — This was originally part of a row of eight, but the other seven at Nos. 158 to 170 were demolished in 1928 to make way for the apartment building to the west (right) at 160 West 73rd Street. How this one was spared is unknown. The buildings across the street are well known and have been written about many times. This one is obscure. I discovered it in February 2007 by combing through New York City building permits.
